It is really the smell of food that gives it its taste, and because there is little gravity in space, the smell floats away before it is able to get to the astronaut's nose. Astronauts also have to deal with a constantly stuffy nose, which further hinders the ability to taste.

Because without gravity, the crumbs would drift all over the place and possibly damage the instruments

In reality they probably could eat bread or crackers, if they have good ventilation to catch the crumbs.

They do eat normal food-it's just freeze-dried, so that they don't need to refrigerate the food. The astronauts add water to the freeze dried food before they eat it, which makes it just like normal food.

I think astronauts DO taste their food in space. The food they eat is freeze dried and dehydrated. Once in space the astronauts rehydrate their food. In todays space missions the food the space pilots are provided are much more attractive and delicious than one would expect.

tasting food is enabled by the taste buds of the tongue. Even in zero gravity i dont see why the taste buds would not function.

Because they get hungry and there is nowhere to get food in space. If Walmart open a store in low Earth orbit, then it won't be as important to take it all with the astronauts. It will be sometime before Walmart or any other retailer think about doing this so the astronauts will need to be fully self sufficient for a long time to come.

They digest exactly the same as you do on earth. The digestive system doesn't depend on gravity for its operation, everything is moved through it by muscle contractions.
