That the stinger cannot be removed without rupturing the apian lower abdomen is the reason why bees die if they sting people. The insect stinger, structured similar to barbed wire that moves around and around like a screw instead of up and down like a syringe, removes digestive material, glands, muscles, and venom sacs and leaves behind fatally big holes at the end of the abdomen. Bees suffer painful deaths for their barbed stingers, which wasps and yellow jackets lack and which explains why they survive stinging other life forms such as people.

Bees typically lose their stingers and most die from the trauma associated with this act. Wasps usually do not. It probably evolved in such a way that the fatal (to the bee) sting was a more effective defense mechanism than simply living. This is not surprising given the reproduction capabilities of insects. The wasps sting defense mechanism evolved differently at some point, allowing the insect to survive the sting.

A bee's stinger is attached to part of it's intestine. The stinger also has a barb on it (unlike a wasp's which does not die after the sting).

When the bee pulls away, part of its intestine stays with the stinger. When you look at the stinger after it has stung, you may even see the intestine attached sometimes.

Why do bees die after they sting?

They die because when they fly off after delivering the sting, some internal organs are ripped out of the insect. The barbed stinger remains in the victim, and the stinger is attached to organs inside the bee.
