Some people belive that magic and witchcraft is the devils work. Also some people think that even though Harry Potter is a childrens book, the latter books gets alot darker. Some people just don't like Harry Potter as its not the type of thing that they are into.
Not everyone does hate Harry Potter. Obviously the person who answered the question before and the person who asked it like it, so not "everyone" hates it!
It also has to do with some religions. In some religions, magic is looked badly upon, so many people criticize it for the immense use of magic.
They also see Harry Potter as encouraging the occult or occult like behavior. There have been many book burnings and bans of the series because of these reasons.
Even though Harry Potter is well-liked by most people who have heard of it, there are some people who do not. This answer applies to them. However, there are two different ways to answer this question:
1) Why do people not like the Harry Potter book/movie series?
Most of the opposition to the Harry Potter book series comes from one of three camps. The first camp is claiming that Harry Potter is not real literature and do not like it on those grounds. They would much rather read Kurt Vonnegut or Shakespeare instead of "middle-brow" books. The second camp is just disinterested since they are not interested in magic or high school stories. Both of these camps realize that money spent on Harry Potter is money not spent on the books they prefer. The third camp opposes Harry Potter on religious grounds, usually because the book is seen to promote a positive view of witchcraft and sorcery which are explicitly prohibited in most holy books.
2) Why do people not the character of Harry Potter within the series?
Harry Potter's almost universal appeal comes from his being the "every-man". Harry is not gifted in terms of intellect, strength, family, or good decision-making. This makes it possible for nearly everyone to see a bit of their own defects in Harry, making him likable. However, there are those people who despise or are bothered by the "every-man".
Harry as a person only shows a deductive mind towards the second half of the seventh book, putting together the Voldemort puzzle. It seems rather silly that it would take him this long to do so. He knows by the end of third year that not only is Voldemort a homicidal sociopath who has tried on repeated occasions to murder him, not only has Voldemort's servant returned to him to make him return more powerful than ever due to a prophecy he heard, and not only is this person so evil and malicious that his 16-year-old-self exulted in the slow death of an 11-year-old girl and the immediate death of another 15-year-old girl, but that Voldemort has numerous conspirators who are looking to aid and abet him in this horrible quest. Why doesn't Harry ask the elders in his life serious questions at this point or at the very least ask about his parents and the war in the 1970s? Why doesn't Harry ask for special Defense Against the Dark Arts lessons proactively (instead of waiting for violence to come to him)? Why doesn't he ask Hermione to help him do research? The answer to these things is simple: as the "every-man" he cannot take a progressive and directed step that "normal people" would not take. Also, Harry Potter books 4-7 would all disappear. However, it makes Harry intensely unlikable since his lack of initiative results in the rise of a Nazi-State, numerous deaths, the promulgation of evil, and massive property damage. Some or all of these things could have been avoided if Harry was a little sharper or a little quicker, as he was at the end of the seventh book.
Everybody likes different things and not everybody enjoys Harry Potter. Some religious groups hate it because they believe it promotes witchcraft in children but that isn't all members.
They do not think the character is nerdy but they think that people who read it are simply because the books are long.
People do. It is a very successful franchise.
Some Christians believe Harry Potter should be banned because it promotes witchcraft among children.
Because Phoebe likes it and she is a sad low life
