The rain drops would damage or destroy their fragile wings.
It depends on the kind. If it is winter, the butterflys are hibernating. The monarch migrates in the winter and moths come at night so that maybe why. Some insects can't survive in rain.
What a brown caterpillar eats sometimes they eat leaves or fruit if you find a caterpillar and you keep it you should give it leaves from the plant (tree) you found it on. But generally they eatbrwon caterpillar food:-)
