The original Blackberry device was made in Munich, Germany in 1999. Rather than a phone, it was actually a two-way pager called Blackberry 850. The name "Blackberry" originated from this device, because the keys resembled drupelets on the blackberry fruits.
The BlackBerry Curve 8350i was made to be space efficient. There are no downloads available as to re-size the typing pad. Perhaps waiting for a newer BlackBerry would be an option.
