In WWII, Atomic bombs were neccesary to save millions of lives. If the atomic bombs weren't dropped, then the US would have to attempt a full invasion of Japan on its home front and millions of lives on both sides would be lost. Based on previous experience with the Japanese, even children would fight for the sake of Japan, because of their belief in the emperor.
