Why every map lies?

The earth is round - the map is printed on flat paper.

So the paper cannot represent the curvature of the earth and still truly represent the distances between places.

Also, mountaintops and valley floors are up and down, and yet a flat map cannot truly depict the physical distance between them, it can only indicate the rate fo change of the elevation.
