Exeter Clock Tower at the end of Queen Street was built by a private individual of some wealth to commemorate their deceased husband.
Shortly after the Highway Code came into Force in the early1950s, it was planned to demolish the tower in order to improve traffif flow. Fortunately this move was aborted.
