He's been away because on the way back home from Troy (the Trojan war) he had to come home, but it was hard because he had to pass a lot of monsters, and shipmates mistakes and a bunch of obstacles and then finally a goddess Kalypso falls in love with him and takes him for herself on the island Ogyyseus or something like that and she wont let him leave. Then he finally gets to leave becauase Athena and every god but Poseidon because they believe he was a hero and deserve to go home so Kaypso releases him but then its a longer journey with more shipmates back to Ithaca again like he first tried to.
Well Athena and the other gods wanted Odysseus to get home because he had been away for so long and he was sad, However Poseidon didn't like Odysseus because Odysseus blinded his son, Athena and Zeus etc decided to help Odysseus get home when Poseidon wasn't there so so they weren't really disagreeing exactly, but that's basically what it happens
In The Odyssey, going home was Odysseus' ultimate goal. He had been away at war for years, and he desperately missed his wife, Penelope. Odysseus knew Penelope may have believed him to be dead, so he needed to get back to her.
Odysseus left Ithaca to fight in the Trojan war, and he has been gone for 20 years. his wife, Penelope, is beautiful and rich. Odysseus has been gone so long that everyone assumes hes dead, so a lot of men are showing up at Odysseus's home, trying to wed her. Penelope still knows in her heart that he is not dead, and odysseuss comes home and slaughters all the suitors.
she was hesitant because it's been so long since she's seen him, she's not sure of its really him or not.
Hermes helped free Odysseus from Calypso. Without him, there would be no way of explaining why Odysseus was gone from Ithaca so long. Further, Hermes helps Odysseus best the enchantress Circe. Otherwise, Odysseus would surely have been turned into a pig along with the rest of his men.

He was unfair. Polphemus may be a brute, but as long as he is on that island he can't hurt the rest of the world. So Odysseus should have just ran away.

It shows that even after Odysseus has been gone for so long, his servants and people can still love him and hope for him to come home.

Circe is a sorceress, she enchants Odysseus and turns men into pigs, although she doesn't do this to Odysseus (lucky man) she does it to his remaining soldiers. So it is the enchantment that keeps him on the island,
