Stewart airport used to be an Air Force base in the 1970's however plans were attempted by Governer Nelson Rockefeller to expand it and this was met by opposition from the local landowners. After a long struggle, no expansion took place however reforms were made to the law to prevent such a thing happening again. In 2000 the airport was the first airport to be privatised, by the ational Express Group from the United Kingdom.
