Because it doen't oxidize, corrode or rust, and is uneffected by water and age.

Answer

because gold does not corrode;) and is almost at the bottom of the reactivity series so is VERY nonreactive

because gold is the least reactive out of all metals and does not corrode as much other metals
Gold not change
because gold does not react with

water

oxygen (air)

or acid

so with it being under the ground it will not react with anything
Gold is a very unreactive metal and so unlike many other materials it does not break down when exposed to the environment for long periods of time.

It Dosen't Corrode And Is Un-Reactive
Because it has low reactivity with moisture/air/other substances.

because gold is a very unreactive element and doesn't corrode or rust very easily and so can last for very long periods of time in the ground
Two main reasons:

  1. Since the beginning of recorded history, Gold has been a highly sought-after precious metals and has served as a symbol of wealth and maintained a value to society throughout history. Gold is a dense, soft, shiny and malleable metal making it very easy for it to be worked into coins, jewelry, religious artifacts and other valued possessions (e.g. plates etc). People normally look after their wealth and keep it in safe places;
  2. Gold maintains its colour and luster without oxidizing in air and water. This means that when compared to other valuable substances of the age (e.g. leather goods, iron weapons etc), Gold remained intact when buried or under the sea on ship wreaks, compared to these other materials that generally decomposed or rusted.

Gold doesn't rot, rust, melt unless heated at high temperatures or damaged by wind, rain, or other conditions. It can stay buried for years be dusted off and look as good as the day it was created. These are the elements that damage artifacts and why we find bits and pieces here and there and gold isn't affected by much. A great deal of the gold used today has been reused over and over. So, the gold ring you wear could possibly have gold in it that is a hundred or more years old. That is cool when you think about it. I have seen gold items that are 4 or 5 thousand years old in museums and they look wonderful.
