Because Nam was the last major war fought by the US. All US operations were and have been compared the Vietnam, examples follow:
1. Operation Urgent Fury-Grenada 1983: First US Military offensive since Vietnam!
2. Operation Just Cause-Panama 1989: Second US military offensive since Vietnam!
3. Operation Desert Storm-Liberation of Kuwait from Iraq in 1991: We have beat the Vietnam Syndrome! (President George Bush Senior's statement in 1991).
4. Operation Iraqi Freedom-Iraq 2003: Shall we use the word "tour", "search and destroy", "Brown Water Navy" those are Vietnam terms ya know?"
5. Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan 2001...tours...might even find the Vietnam terms like "firebases" becoming popular...choppers too (helicopters).
Gotta have a war to compare other conflicts to, and Nam's it! (They didn't have CH-47 Chinooks and jet bombers in WWII you know!).
