Lead causes birth defects and brain damage, so the government banned it from being added to fuels. It's purpose was to cushion the valves in the engine, but they now make valves that are okay without lead in the fuel. If you have a very old car, you have to either get another additive for the fuel to help cushion the valves or have the heads rebuilt using the newer style valves.
