Because going to the moon is extremely expensive and there was no reason to go back. It has nothing to do with any supposed hoax.
Nixon killed Apollo as quickly as he could as it was the idea of Democrat JFK. He even renamed Cape Kennedy "Cape Canaveral" again. No president since has pushed for another flight hard enough to get it done. No bucks, no Buck Rogers.

According from what I understand, no one has visited the moon ever since the Apollo mission mainly because of politics and how Congress stopped funding it, throwing away parts that they paid for. I assume it's just to fun anything else that they found important.

Yes We could have done it even earlier on Apollo 10 which was a test run and did everything else but the actual landing. Since we worked up to it in stages, there is no reason to suspect it was not real.
