I wouldn't say that they are completely useless, but they have become more complex and hard to use with the bloating of information on the internet. It is much harder to find relevant content. Different search engines try to find what you need in different ways, but because they are more specialized the way you are searching affects your results and asking differently is the only way to get what you want.
Other times, the information that you want just isn't on the internet, at least in the form we are looking for, and so we think that a search failed when it is actually that no one has compiled the information we are looking for.
There are two types of search engines 1. Hybrid search engines 2. Meta search engines
The World Wide Web is fairly useless without a quick and easy way to find what you are looking for on it. That is why we have Google (and other search engines).
Search engines have become a part of everyday life. It is a wonderful way to find out information that before took you ages to look for in books. Knowledge truly is at our fingertips.
Spider-Based Search Engines. Directory-Based Search Engines. Link-Based Search Engines.
There are primarily three types of search engines: traditional search engines, vertical search engines, and meta-search engines. Traditional search engines like Google and Bing index the entire web and return results based on algorithms. Vertical search engines focus on specific niches or industries, such as medical or academic searches. Meta-search engines aggregate results from multiple search engines to provide a broader range of information.
Horizontal search engines are general-purpose search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Vertical search engines, meanwhile, are specialized by content such as Trulia, Mocavo and Yelp.
