He was an African-American professional jazz musician popular in the 1920s. He played piano, composed many songs and had his own band that became very, very well-known. I'm pretty sure it was called The Duke Ellington Orchestra or something similar to that.
Duke Ellington was recognized as a phenomenal musician in his life time. He was awarded with the Medal of Freedom in 1970 by President Nixon among his many other awards and achievements.
