The answer is prophetic in nature. God said he would make Israel a burdensome stone in the end days. Zechariah 12:2"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in seige both against Judah and against Jerusalem."
The crusades were wars (3 of them) to gain capture of the holy land. There were two sides Catholics and Muslims, both wanted the holy land for religious reasons. Yet man kind never learns and there are still there are still fights on which religion has control the region.
