On one side is oxygenated blood, and on the other is blood that does not contain oxygen. It is divided into two because if those two different types of blood mix, your brain can never get enough oxygen to function properly, leading to mental stupidity.. It is really important that those two types of blood do not mix.

The left side is thicker because it has to pump blood to the entire body, where as the right side only has to deliver blood to the lungs. Your body is actually large compared to your heart. Your heart is only the size of your fist. Ask me if you have any questions :)

This is a very efficient way to pump blood where it needs to go.

Dividing the heart into two sides allows the heart to pump deoxygenated and oxygenated blood in different directions. Having two chambers (an atrium and a ventricle) on each side allows pressure to build up - increasing the rate of flow of blood.
