"hydrogen is denser then air so it sinks . . . . helium is less dense than air so it rises!" Im not sure where the above person got their answer, or even what the originator of the question was talking about.

Hydrogen is much lighter than "air" (78.08% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, and trace amounts of other gases) Hydrogen with an atomic weight of 1.00794 u, hydrogen is the lightest element.

Balloons full of it will deflate faster than balloons full of helium due to its teeny molecule size. but i assure you they do fly.

Hydrogen is so light it escapes our atmosphere if released.

What chemicals do balloons contain?

helium or oxygen depending on what you put in them

What is a very light gas found in some balloons?

Helium is used in blimps and balloons. It is the second lightest element to hydrogen, which is not used because it is highly flammable.

Helium is used in balloons instead of hydrogen because it is?

Helium is used instead of hydrogen because it is nonflammable.

Why helium is better than hydrogen for balloons?

because helium does not mix with other elements

Is helium safe to fill balloons with?

Yes. I would go with helium if you can get it. Hydrogen can explode.

Which kind of gas are in balloons?

hydrogen, helium, hot air

Which gas is used to fill the balloons?

Hydrogen, until the Hindenburg, then everyone realized that "Hey, Hydrogen isn't that safe to use!"Hot air balloons, you mean?? Just air that is hot.Actual hand balloons and such? Helium or again, just air. Helium floats better because it is lighter than the surrounding air around it. Helium and air are still used in both.

Is helium only used in balloons and air ships?

Helium is the most used gas for balloons; sometimes hot air and rarely hydrogen.

What are the gases used to fly balloons?

Two of the gases that are used to fly balloons are Hydrogen and Helium. Helium is the preferred gas because Hydrogen is very explosive. The Hindenburg disaster was caused by the ignition of the Hydrogen gas that filled it.

How can you determine if a balloon is filled with helium gas or hydrogen gas?

Fill two balloons. One with hydrogen gas and the other with helium gas. Allow them to float on a piece of string. Taking a lighted/burning taper/splinter. , and burst the two balloons with the burning splinter. The helium filled balloon will just 'pop' and fall to the ground. The hydrogen filled balloon will 'pop with a flash of flame' So helium ; NO Flame Hydrogen ; A FLASH of FLAME.

Which gas is commonly used in balloons and airships?

Hydrogen was one of the earliest gases to be used for inflatable flying balloons, but following the Hindenberg disaster helium is now used, as it is chemically inert.

What element is used more in making balloons?

Helium is a gas used to inflate lighter than air balloons.
