Why is 2001 and 2002 etc. in the 21st Century and not the 20th?

This is a common misconception, because people forget this: The years 0-100 were the first century, 101-200 were the second, etcetera. So we are now in the 21st century even though our years begin with 20. I hope this makes sense :)
