The Electricity when generated is always in AC form. Some additional devices (like commutator, carbon brushes etc) to be used to conevrt the AC to DC form. It is very cumbersome, unviable. Concept of transformer is feasible only in AC form. Induction motor which a most common application is based on AC. Hence AC usage come into practice. Neverthless DC has certain advantages like less losses. Hence you find many high voltage transmission system is on DC voltage. Only direct source of DC is from Batteries.
