AIDS does kill people. It infects the immune system. The immune system then will not be strong enough to fight off diseases.

AIDS, the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, attacks the immune system of the body, as the name indicates. When the body's immune system is not functioning well, it is no longer able to fight off Infectious Diseases. This creates the opportunity for an infectious disease to infect that person (hence, it can be described as an opportunistic disease). And since the disease cannot be controlled by the disabled immune system, it will progress to the point of death.
