Why is Australia hot in winter?

The seasons are reversed south of the equator so Summer is in December and Winter is in July.

It has to do with the tilt of the Earth's axis.

In June, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun which means it receives more hours of sunshine than the southern hemisphere and is therefore warmer than the southern hemisphere.

In December, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, receiving more hours of sunshine and is therefore warmer.

Parts of Australia - particularly the northern regions, which are closer to the equater - are not cold in the winter.

The reason for this is because of the tilt in the axis of Earth's spin. If Earth spun on an axis with no tilt, there would be no seasons at all. With a slight tilt as we have, then during half of the trip around the Sun, the north pole tilts to see the sun and more sunlight falls on the northern hemisphere, making it warmer than average (summer). Meanwhile, the south pole is not seeing the Sun and Australia is getting less light than usual, making it colder.
