Australia Day is currently celebrated on the 26th of January each year. This is the anniversary of the landing of the first permanent English Settlers in 1788, a date which the English saw as "colonising" a barren land and the native Aborigines saw as an invasion. The locals (who were not given equal rights until the 1960's) spent the next century and more in a state of constant decline and were in some places eradicated entirely (e.g. Tasmania). Their children and grandchildren were kidnapped and taken to live with "civilised" folk (the 'Stolen Generation'), and massacres of Aborigines were all too common by White settlers wanting to use the land for agriculture, not understanding the spiritual significance the Land holds for the natives.
Thus the Anniversary of the Landing of the English (The First Fleet) is something that causes a lot of pain, heartache, and anger among the indigenous people of Australia. While they are a proud part of the Australian Country there is a strong objection to having a national day of celebration on January 26 for these reasons.
