Cheyenne was part of the Dakota Territory. When the Wyoming Territory was created in 1868, Cheyenne was chosen as the territorial capital. Cheyenne was a fast growing city and was important to the Union Pacific Railroad. It also became a social and cultural center along with being a center for the government. When Wyoming became a state in 1890, Cheyenne was chosen as the capital.
