The Netherlands used to be a christian country and still is a christian-humanist-atheist country. Where Christmas used to be a religious feast it has slowly become a cultural and commercial event like in most of the western world. The reason that it is so important is (1) because it never ceased to be important since the christian days and (2) because it's made important by the marketing departments of businesses who earn their living on it.
One important holiday in Netherlands is national queen day: April 30. Other holidays are New Years Day, Christmas and Easter.
