The success in the redesign was down to the new writer Russel Davies who has penned many programmes in the past but this is to be his most successful to date. Added to this was the use of a new, modern style of Doctor in Christopher Eccleston and a known face as the assistant in Billy Piper. Eccleston was determined to make the character more street wise and "action hero" with some of the personality of Doctors he'd grown up with. He also committed to a short series only. Russel T Davies used his Welsh roots. The majority of the "New" Doctors live have been filmed in Wales through the BBC regional studios. This, He claims has had a massive impact as the technical innovation used , skills of the production teams and new location shooting opportunities away from the previously used "London scene" all have provided a fresh, new appearance. He has also made much of the impact of Doctor Who fanatic David Tennants contribution. Tennant grew up with Tom Baker (the voice of little Britain) as the eccentric Doctor as it was Baker who "lived " longer than any other to that point. Tennant loved the portrayal and said to a small degree influenced character. The marketing of specials across the 2009 period actual meant that each show was a key event. This is proven by the Christmas edition which is reported to have swept the viewing targets. Now the publicity is at work again already screening at key time of the day the new Doctor, Matt Smith and his version starting in April 2010. Most of the series has been completed at Cardiff.
