If the reference is to Sir Francis Drake it is possible that his New Albion was actually what is known today as Bodega Bay about 40 miles northwest of San Francisco. New Albion was the English Claim to the west coast of North America and was at least further up the northern coast of California then the Spanish Mission system had reached. While the English failed to establish a genuine colony at that site, as time passed the Russians eventually did.
