Halloween used to be a pagan festival of the harvest and celebrating the dead. Early Christians were willing to convert pagans at all costs, so they took the festival and weaved it into the Catholic Religion so the pagans would be more comfortable converting. They changed the date of the festival to the night before All Saints' Day: a Catholic festival celebrating all those who made it to heaven. Saints were also known as "hallows," which means "holies." Since Halloween was the day before All Saints' Day or All Hallows' Day, it became known as "All Hallows' Eve," which was later shortened to Halloween.
