To commemorate the victory of Jewish priests against the assimilation efforts of the Syrian Greeks. After a victorious battle of few against the many, the lights in the Temple were rekindled with oil that was only enough to last for one day. However, miraculously the MENORAH stayed lit for eight days. The rabbis perceived this as a sign that this battle was unusual and had to be memorialized forever.
