The empire line is a style of dress with a loose, straight fit and a high waist line. It was popular during the time of 1795 to 1820, which by happenstance was the same period within which Jane Austen wrote her novels. Since her novels were all about young women who fell in love and got married, the main characters in them would all have worn such dresses.
Jane Austen is associated with the Empire line because it was a popular style of dress during her time. The Empire line features a high waistline just below the bust, which was fashionable in the early 19th century when Austen's novels were set. Many adaptations of her novels also feature characters wearing dresses with Empire waistlines.

Jane Austen is a great writer to go for for classic love novels with happy endings, though she has written very few books. You should try 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Emma'. 'Sense and Sensibility' ends happily too.Something in a different line is 'Jane Eyre' by Charolette Bronte. A lot of passions, trials and sufferings, but it ends happily :)
Mainly through trade or inhereitance. There were a fair amount of lawyers and doctors but trade was a growing market. Many wealthy englishmen came from a long line of wealthy englishmen so the majority of their fortune had been left to them by their late fathers. Sons inhereited the family fortune. Very few cases of women inhereiting. This is evident in Jane Austens "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice".
