He died for our sins and his death is essential because he was a sacrifice for us to save us from eternal death and sin. Not only the physical punishment of beating was unbearable but the psychological damage that it did to Jesus.

Jesus death is important to Christians today because in His death he paid the price for our sins. This fact applied to people who were there when Jesus walked the earth and it still applies to us today. When we accept this free gift He paid for we have the peace that comes with knowing that we go to heaven [where there is no suffering or pain] when we die. We also have the joy of belonging to a family of people who believe likewise. It doesn't mean we are perfect - mores the pity. Most of us do try to be more Christlike but we often fail, the good news is that we can then go to Christ in prayer and ask forgiveness - again!

Jesus also does miracles today just as He did when He walked the earth. I've experienced them.

This is what our Blessed Lord came to earth to do - to offer Himself as a sacrifice to the Father in reparation for all the sins of mankind. Without His death, we would have no hope of every entering heaven, or even dreaming of it.

But since the very beginning when Adam and Eve fell, God promised that He would rectify things. Our Blessed Lord's death on the cross was Satan's complete and total defeat; but we must each of us believe in Our Blessed Lord's action, and put it into effect in our life.

Our Blessed Lord made salvation possible for everyone who is baptized and believes in Him, but only possible, we must individually make up in our lives what is still lacking in Christ's death (Colossians 1:24), taking up our cross each day and following Him (Matthew 16:24).
