Like the Pharisees in the verses before this, they were trying to discredit Jesus with their hypocrisy or in the Sadducees case, the doctrine of the resurrection. The Sadducees were an 'elite' group of religious leaders who denied the existence of angels and the resurrection. They rejected the oral traditions and accepted only the validity of the Law - the Pentateuch or 1st five books of OT. They knew Deuteronomy 25: 5,6 which supported the custom of marrying the widow of one's brother but it was not absolutely binding (Deuteronomy 25:7-10). So this story shows their vain attempt at discrediting the doctine of the resurrection. However, Jesus using the Scripture, not only wrong but ignorant of the meaning of Scripture - lacking spiritual insight to understand God's purposes.
In order to fulfull the OT prophecy Micah 5:2. Bethlehem is known as the "house of bread". Jesus fulfills the OT manna in the wilderness and also the tabernacle "shewbread" whereas He is the "bread of life".
For Jews,The Jewish Bible, which is called the Tanach, is a history of the relationship between God and the Jewish people. It demonstrates God's unending faithfulness to the Covenant, lays out God's wishes and provides wisdom for living life. Although the Christian Old Testament was based on the Tanach, the OT was altered to support the teachings of Christianity and therefore the OT is not considered a valid text within Judaism. For ChristiansThey refer to it as the Old Testament. For Christians, it is everything that the Jews believe plus the important addition that the Old Testament is seen as preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah - Jesus Christ. For MuslimsThey don't regard it as being as sacred as the Qur'an (some of the stories in the Old Testament have different endings in the Qur'an) but it is seen as a record of God's relationship with the Jews. I think it's fair to say that it is not as important to Muslims as it is to Christians or Jews.
The original Hebrew name of Jesus is Yeshua or Yehoshua.while Jesus himself is not mentioned in the old testament.the name Yehoshua (Joshua) which Yeshua is a version of is mentioned. The name Jesus revealed in the NT is known by the name Jehovah or YHWH in the OT.
In Matthewe 16:16 it says, "Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Christ, the son of the living God'" and Jesus replies that this was ot revealed by man but by His Father in heaven.
