Because Jesus is the Christian church's "cornerstone"... its foundational beginning. The church is built upon Him. Without Him... it falls.

"...ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the Household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ HIMSELF BEING THE CHIEF CORNER STONE; in whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an Holy Temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit." (Eph.2:19-22)

"By the Grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the One already laid, WHICH IS JESUS CHRIST.

If Jesus Christ isn't the center of the church... the church is built off-center.

The church is Christ's bride (Eph. 5:22-31), God's new creation (2 Cor. 5:170), fighters against Satan (Eph. 6:10-20), and bearers of light (Eph. 5:7-9). The church is devoted to Jesus Christ as Lord. He established the church under His authority (Matt. 16:13-20) and created the foundation for its existence in His redeeming death and demonstration of God's power in His resurrection.
