Kansas is a state which leads the nation in agriculture. One of the things which Kansas leads the nation in is growth of wheat. This is why it is called the breadbasket of the world.
Because Kansas produces more wheat than any other state.
The prairies (as in the US Midwest and Great Plains) are called the breadbasket of the world. This is because they are the biome most rich in soil nutrients, and with irrigation it is widely used for agriculture.

the breadbasket of the world
Grassland is termed as "BREAD BASKET" of the world. It is because it consist of mainly grasses of various sizes & kinds. Also most of cereal crops like corn, oats etc while few herb & shurbs are produced in this area.
There are three major plains of the world. They are the North American Great Plains, the African Serengeti Plains, and the Russian Steppes.
The Midwest section of the US is the world's breadbasket.
That was its name in the early 1800's, when the land seemed flat, parched and barren compared to the forests, hills, and valleys of the Atlantic states. What became apparent later was that the grasslands of the prairies had incredibly fertile soil, needing only a supply of water for irrigation. The Midwest and Great Plains were soon developed by homestead farmers into the "breadbasket of the world."
