A:

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as synoptic gospels because when laid in parallel and read synoptically ('with the same eye') in the original Greek language, it can be seen that there is a literary dependency among them. Scholars have determined that Mark was the first New Testament gospel to be written and that Matthew and Luke were substantially based on Mark. However, a further source document has been found to have contributed sayings material attributed to Jesus, in both Matthew and Luke. This document is now known as the hypothetical 'Q' document.

Not only are many passages in Luke identical to the corresponding passages in Mark, often using exactly the same words in the Greek language, but we have further evidence of this relationship, because of the 'Missing Block'. A substantial section of Mark, comprising a total of 74.5 verses from Mark 6:47 to Mark 8:27a, is missing from Luke. This results in the curious conjunction found in Luke 9:18 "And it came to pass as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them ..." These clauses are more meaningful when found in Mark at the start and end of the material missing from Luke. It has been suggested that the person who provided the copy of Mark to the author of Lukerealised that he would be offended by the passage in which Jesus called gentiles 'dogs' (Mark 7:27) and so removed that page and a further twelve pages so that the gap would not be apparent.

Which gospel is also a synoptic gospel along with Mark and Luke?

A:In addition to Mark and Luke, Matthew is also called a synoptic gospel. This is because when laid side by side and read synoptically ('with the same eye') in the original Greek language, it is possible to see that there is a literary dependency among the three gospels. Scholars have studied this effect and say that it is clear that much of Mark's Gospel was copied by the authors of Matthew and Luke.

Which Gospel was written independent of the Synoptic Gospels?

A:John's Gospel is certainly quite different to the synoptic gospels. It is almost completely independent of Mark's Gospel, from which scholars say that Matthew and Luke were copied. However, it is not really independent, as it was loosely based on Luke, with a small amount of material taken direct from Mark. Being further removed from Mark, and having been written with somewhat less concern compared with Matthew and Luke for following the source as closely as possible, John's Gospel is relatively independent of the Synoptic Gospels.

What is the synoptic theory?

Why is Mark's Gospel said to have been written first?

A:The generally accepted date for authorship of Mark's Gospel is approximately the year 70 - between 68 and 73 CE. When Matthew and Luke are viewed in parallel with Mark and seen synoptically ('with the same eye') in the original Greek language, it can be demonstrated that one gospel must have been the original from which the other two were copied. It can then be established conclusively that this original is Mark and that the other two synoptic gospels were largely based on it. Therefore Mark was the earliest synoptic gospel. .John's Gospel was loosely based on Luke's Gospel, with some material taken direct from Mark. It is therefore, of course, also later than Mark.

Why was the first part of John's Gospel called the Book of Signs?

A:Early biblical scholars did not immediately recognise the dependency of John's Gospel on the synoptic gospels, but realised that there did seem to be a source document from which parts of John were derived. They called this hypothetical source document the Signs Gospel, because of the references in Johnto 'signs'. Scholars now recognise that John's Gospel was loosely based on Luke's Gospel, with some material taken direct from Mark's Gospel, and thus the notion of a Signs Gospel, used by the author of John as a source, is no longer widely supported.
