Mary is portrayed as the mother of Jesus. Matthew and Luke contain nativity stories about Jesus and Mary, with Joseph playing a lesser role. In Mark chapter 3, Mary comes to stop Jesus because she believes he is 'beside himself', bu Jesus rejects her and his brothers, saying, "Who is my mother, or my brethren?" Finally, in John's Gospel, Jesus gives the beloved disciple responsibility for caring for Mary after his crucifixion. Each gospel adds something new to the tradition about Mary.

A bit more is said about Mary than Joseph, not many Scriptures are dedicated to the mother of Jesus. Of primary importance, she is from the royal line. Mary was of the tribe of Judah and a descendant of David. Somewhere around circa 5/4 B.C. Mary was living in Nazareth and was unmarried, betrothed to Joseph. The story continues here with God's angel informing here that she will be the mother of the long awaited Messiah of all mankind - perhaps the most important announcement ever:

Luke 1:26-35American Standard Version (ASV)26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.28 And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be.30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God.31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.34 And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God.

Why is Mary important in the church today?

Mary is only important in the Catholic Church. Mary occupies a unique place in biblical history. She conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Then she bore the Messiah. Among women, she is most blessed (Luke 1:42) and all who claim to be Christian acknowledge her as a chosen vessel of God. But the Catholic Church has developed extra-Biblical teaching regarding Mary: 1. Mary is called the Mother of God. 2. Prayers offered to Mary 3. Immaculate Conception (that she was sinless) 4. Assumption of Mary 5. Mary Proclaimed Mother of the Church
