Moldavia is not part of Russia, it is a geographic and historical region in Eastern Europe. Western Moldavia is presently part of Romania, the Eastern part is now the Republic of Moldova and the northern and south-eastern parts are now parts of Ukraine.
The name had been widely used before the union of Moldavia and Wallachia. It draws attention to the claim of the Romanians to be descended from the Romans. There was also a connection to the word rumân, which means serf. This meaning disappeared when the serfdom was disestablished in 1746.

Sorry to say but there was no such thing as "Romania" back in the 1700s. Back then, you'd have the three principalities, Moldavia, Wallachia, and Transylvania.
