Because it is not entirely true, the characters are vaguely based off of people Steinbeck has encountered but it is not 100% fact. It was all in Steinbeck's imagination.

"Of Mice and Men" can be considered a fable because it conveys moral lessons through the actions and relationships of the characters. The story highlights themes such as the consequences of dream chasing, the nature of friendship, and the harsh realities of society, which are common elements found in fables. Additionally, the novel's simple and direct storytelling style, as well as its emphasis on universal truths, further align it with the fable genre.

its not real it never happened. it symbolizes the American dream of being able to prosper and become rich, which might not happen to everybody but its worth a try. even though it never happened its possible to happen.
