Loose, broken, or worn valve train component. Remove the valve cover to find the problem.
It is supposed to rattle when you shake it. if it does not, it needs replacing. The rattle you hear is the check valve.

The Wrangler uses a fixed orifice system. There isn't a pcv valve. The tube coming from the center rear of the valve cover is the orifice. The Wrangler uses a fixed orifice system. There isn't a pcv valve. The tube coming from the center rear of the valve cover is the orifice.
On top of the valve cover there is a hose coming out of it and into the air intake manifold. Removing the hose from the valve cover side will expose the PCV valve.
The PCV is located on the valve cover. Its the one thing on a s-series that should rattle :) -RC-
My Cavalier doesn't have the same engine yours does (mine's the 2.4), but if you really have a PCV valve the springs in them can go weak and they will rattle under heavy vacuum conditions. Mine's been rattling lately as well, I just haven't crawled in there yet to find the valve...
Valve lash needs adjusting or you have a lifter that is sticking.
