Actually, aside from wide-angle or wide-aperture interchangeable lenses, there is little to recommend a digital SLR over other digital cameras these days and new non-SLR cameras are starting to have interchangeable lenses. A number of digital cameras include a 'viewfinder' screen in addition to the large back screen...both show exactly the framing of the image that will be captured. In one sense these cameras are BETTER than a SLR because, in the manual mode, the latter always show a view even though the exposure settings may be incorrect.
Most of the popular SLR digital camera also have an option to show the view on a large digital back screen. An SLR camera offers a much wider variety of lens selections and are the camera of choice for most serious amateur photographers and all professionals.
