Spain at that time had a large,powerful Navy(called the Armada) which allowed it to project its' power and influence to distant places.However,in 1588 the Spanish Armada was soundly defeated by the British Navy under Sir Francis Drake which affected a shift in dominance on the high seas,and so began the reign of "Britainia Rules the Waves".
From 1550 to 1650 Spain was the dominate power on the European continent. thay had control of all voages initiated out of the continent. It was ruled by the powerful and still rising house of Hapsburg, which also had family connections to other powers on the continent.
