When Sebastian was arrested for refusing, as an army officer, to persecute Christians, the emperor ordered him executed. He was shot with a number of arrows and left for dead. He survived the execution and was treated for his injuries by St. Irene. He returned to evangelizing and was again arrested and beaten to death.
