Oral tradition has it that it was named by Timothy Baldwin, 1st Town Moderator, after the town in England where he and many of the first settlers in town were from. Stoneham, England is in the south of England near Southhampton. It existed as a separate town until it was absorbed by Eastleigh in the 1930's.
