Why is Suriname's population so low?

That the inhabitable area is small and concentrated and that there was a major exodus from the Republic are reasons why Suriname has such a low population. Almost 80 percent of Suriname is covered by rainforests. Most of the population lives along the coast. Also one-third of the population chose to emigrate to the Netherlands around the time of Suriname's independence on November 25, 1975.
