Time Warner is splitting from AOL because AOL is starting to tank. By tank, I mean it's going down. When Time Warner initially made the merger with AOL, the users on AOL measured in the 10's of millions...now it only measures in a few million and that number continues to drop as people discover FireFox or Explorer (which is on the way out as well- due to security bypasses). Time Warner hoped to have a direct link to AOL users along the line of advertising but if the number of users continues to drop, then the money spent on advertising is wasted. Time Warner is cutting its losses now.
