Before the unity took place, the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates were collectively known as The Trucial States
it is now called United Arab Emirates, an independent country from Oman.
While the various Emirates were under British Protectorate, the region was jointly called the TRUCIAL STATES.

The recent history of Sharjah goes back to the mid 16th century under the ruling Al Qawasim Family, who came to the area from Iraq. Although the region is known to have been inhabited for well over 2,000 years on a nomadic basis. Between (about) 1820 and 1968 it was part of a British protectorate known as the Trucial States. On the 2 December 1971, Sharjah became one of the first 6 (eventually 7) Trucial States to form what is now the United Arab Emirates.
