Windows XP is slow to start because of the following reasons.: -
a) Services: - Windows XP starts many services during bootup. You can remove some services that start up with the computer boot up like indexing service and many other that actually slows your computer even during normal operation. You can disable all these by clicking start button (bottom left in the task bar) then clicking run.. In the dialog type a word msconfig. Then click enter to get a dialog box. In this dialog box click services and remove the tick mark from the squares of the services like indexing service etc and all other services that you know are not required.
b) Boot INI: - Then click Boot INI tab in the same dialog and reduce the timeout from 30 seconds to 3 seconds.
c) Startup: - Then click the Startup tab in the same dialog and remove tick from all check boxes where the file is not required to start with the computer. For example the files like HP printer, etc. But do not remove ticks from your antivirus, firewall etc which must be started up always to prevent virus attacks. Now close the dialog box.
d) Delete files: - Now delete files in the windows temp folder and windows prefetch folder and also temp folder of documents and settings folder. Empty the recycle bin and create a restore point thereafter.
e) Defragment Hard Disk: - Now defragment the hard disk.
You can feel the speed of your PC once you reboot after all these steps. A thorough explanation how to do it can be found on searching the net.
You can not simply remove the Professional option from XP and revert back to Home. To take a machine from Windows XP Professional to Windows XP Home you would first need to wipe the machine (format the hard drive), then reinstall the Windows XP Home operating system. It makes little sense to do so, however, because Windows XP Professional is a hardier operating system and can perform better network tasks than Windows XP Home. Windows XP Professional Edition is the business edition of Windows XP Windows XP Home Edition is the home edition of Windows XP you cannot replace XP Professional with XP Home Edition unless you erase the windows installation and start over why would you want to do this XP Professional contains all the features of Windows XP Home Edition

Not directly. You can format the hard drive and install Windows XP cleanly. You can upgrade directly to Windows XP Professional (which is more expensive).
