Mainly because that is exactly what it is. All the parts in a computer work together and cannot function alone. A monitor is no good if there is no output going to it from the video card, and a video card won't work if it gets no power (power supply unit) and no instructions from the software. The instructions cannot be processed without a processor (CPU), and there won't be any instructions if there is no place to store them (RAM and hard drive).
