It has a backbone, and an advanced skeletal structure (have you eaten chicken lately?) Therefore the Avis (not the car rental agency) are classed as Chordata. No strings attached (pun intended: they have a spinal cord).

An alligator is a vertebrate because it has a spine. Alligators have a spine and bones, and so therefore are a vertebrate.
